We've been doing a lot of percussion playing in the last couple of weeks. I have found this to be a good practical way to play music with big numbers of kids and especially with kids who don't play an instrument. The great thing about percussion is that virtually ANYONE can begin playing music in an ensemble within minutes of touching an instrument/s for the first time! It's an effective way for the kids to learn (by doing) how to keep time, improvide a simple pattern that suits and maintain it, start and stop playing on cue and to count in groups/bars of 4!
