In the year 12 music class we brainstormed a range of music 'themes' and each student had to lucky dip one, then select a song to suit to prepare to perform - the process was fun and I was happy at their excitement and the challenge it has presented for most of them. Themes include; Dead Heroes, Other languages, Love, Choose a decade, Rap, Genre Flip. The way the student chooses to perform is up to them, either vocal or instrumental (or both)

This week a year 10 student was asked to mihi (greet in Maori) to a group of visitors. He was asked a few days in advance and he approached me to help him with it, so we sat down at lunchtime and I talked him through it and wrote it out. Unfortunately I had a class at the time the guests arrived, so I was unable to be there, but he told me later that it went well. I was happy that he was willing and able to step up and happy that not only was I able to help out in that area but that he was comfortable to come and ask me for my assistance! The new POI E doco has inspired me to create and teach a new unit based on iconic kiwi songs such as; Poi E (of course!), April Sun In Cuba, E Ipo, Royals, Home Again etc. We'll learn and perform the songs, a bit about the artists/bands and write reviews etc.
