For this observation there weren't any senior teachers available to come in so I videoed the lesson. This edited lesson includes 'Words of the Week', a screening of my tutorial/help video for a current NZ Music Month activity and singing practice My PLD group recently decided we'd all start this initiative to contribute to school wide literacy improvement, so this week I started with "Words of the Week" whereby we go over 5 words with each junior class to contribute to raising vocab and literacy in general and for my subject.
I do a lot of eliciting their knowledge on these words as opposed to simply telling them what they mean. This allows them to teach each other as well as learn from me. I do tell them the importance of the words and offer examples of their use to demonstrate the meanings. Admittedly it's been a little haphazard in it's execution as it's new both to me and the students and their existing literacy levels are very widely spread too. However, I'm glad I've started and it's getting better with repetition and learning from mistakes and/or misunderstandings etc. I have just spent 3 weeks in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand and had an amazing time and experience. As well as delving into culture, places, language and food, I had some great teaching experiences also. Here are a couple of episodes of my vlog from the trip. You can also see the whole vlog playlist here. |
