This week I have been practicing a performance of the song 'Heathens' alongside my year 10 students - all of them are very much beginners (some literally, the day before this video!) and a couple of them can be hard work behaviouraly. That said, we had a blast with this! Although I perform with them mainly because they need help and encouragement, I must admit to enjoying playing music with them too as I feel it's a healthy 'we're all in together' vibe!

In the holidays I resurrected my band from 2008-2010. HANGMAN is alive! I even had one my year 12 students turn up to our humble little music store gig with his grandparents and I was stoked that he went out of his way (in the holidays and a 25 minute drive away!) to enjoy the music! I've been having a great week back at school for the home stretch (term 4). I have found myself laughing more, having kids on, playing music during class and embracing more spontaneity and chaos than usual. The students have responded well and I believe it's because we have built a rapport together over the course of the year - it's a great place to reach cos we can give each other stick, have a laugh and move on without any hurt feelings or awkwardness. It has also alleviated my tendency towards stress and grumpiness when things aren't planned to a T or when students play up (which can be quite regular tbh!).
